Abstract
Five cases of pneumocystis carinii pneumonia were diagnosed in adult patien ts following intensive chemotherapy in the Royal Group of Hospitals haemato logy unit, Belfast, within a space of six months. The common features and t he risk factors contributing to the increased susceptibility of these patie nts are discussed, as are the likely mechanisms of transmission of infectio n.
