The paper describes the development of a programme of interdisciplinary pro
fessional education and training in the UK as influenced by new practices i
n environmental management. The roles of academic institutions and professi
onal qualifying bodies are considered in relation to career development nee
ds. The concepts behind a radically new professional qualification are disc
ussed and methods for its delivery in practice are explained. The importanc
e of clearly defined aims and objectives for such a course is stressed. (C)
