W. Ramakrishna et al., Expansion of a (GA) dinucleotide at a microsatellite locus associated withdomestication in rice, BIOCHEM GEN, 36(9-10), 1998, pp. 323-327
Microsatellites undergo rapid changes over short evolutionary time periods
which can be phylogenetically informative in related species. Here we show
the repeat unit expansion of a (GA)(n)-type microsatellite in the process o
f cultivation of rice from its wild ancestors. We amplified a microsatellit
e locus harboring (GA)(n) repeats from several wild and cultivated rices. S
equencing revealed art increase in repeat number from 14 in distantly relat
ed wild rice species to 24 in the widely grown present-day indica rice cult
ivars.
