Abstract
Cationic exchange measurements, in calcium clay in contact with Me2+(NO3)(2 ) solutions at ionic strength maintained constant by adding Ca(NO3)(2), are difficult to establish when the exchanged cations released in solution are measured by application of the concentrations difference method. XPS analy sis of the cations retained by the clay allows the removal of this analytic al difficulty. This is illustrated by the example of Ca-Cd and Ca-Pb exchan ges on a Ca-montmorillonite.
