Abstract
Analytic expressions for the small-signal optical gain and noise figur e of a counter-pumped fibre Raman amplifier are presented, for unequal signal and pump loss coefficients. The author also presents analytic approximations for the gain limitations imposed by double Rayleigh sca ttering.
