Abstract
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) is a potent inflammatory cytokine involved i n type 1 diabetes and acts through defined IL-1 beta signaling pathways. In the present work ne describe induction of DNA binding activity to signal t ransducer and activator of transcription (STAT) in response to IL-1 beta in clonal insulin-secreting cells, Moreover, IL-1 beta activates a short isof orm of STAT-3 that potently stimulates transcription, Immunoprecipitation s tudies reveal an interaction between the activated STAT3 and the IL-1 recep tor accessory protein indicating an association between the two signaling p athways. This may be a novel point of transduction cross talk and an additi onal mechanism utilised by IL-1 beta in the pancreatic beta-cell during the process of type 1 diabetes.
