Abstract
This paper considers the optimal design of thermally coupled distillation c olumns and dividing wall columns using detailed column models and mathemati cal optimization. The column model used is capable of describing both conve ntional and thermally coupled columns, which allows comparisons of differen t structural alternatives to be made. Possible savings in both operating an d capital costs of up to 30% are illustrated using two case studies.
