Extraneous matter, consisting of tops, leaves and field material, incorpora
ted with commercial cane during harvest reduces efficiency and sugar recove
ry at the factory, In order to control extraneous matter, a low-cost, relia
ble evaluation method is required. The core sampler is frequently used in m
ills to determine cane quality, and was used in this study as the basis for
developing a simple methodology for determining extraneous matter in cane
samples. Theoretical considerations indicated that the relation between suc
rose content of a commercial cane sample and cleaned sub-sample should prov
ide a reasonable estimate. Laboratory and field trials confirmed the potent
ial of this methodology.
