The acid-base analysis method described by Fend and based on Stewart's prin
ciples was applied to sheep, to obtain baseline data. The parameters measur
ed were venous pH, pCO(2) HCO3-, PCV albumin, Na+ Cl-, glucose and BUN. The
calculated parameters were BEfw BEua, BECl BEalb, SID, AG and serum osmola
lity. The possible variations of the Fend's parameters have been discussed
The main conclusion is that this new approach gives a deeper knowledge of t
he acid-base status than traditional approaches although it is difficult to
give a predictive value by Fencl's method: in clinical applications. In th
is sense, the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation maintains its traditional valu
e.
