A study of heavy metal (Pb, Cd, Mn, V, Zn and Fe) concentrations in at
mospheric particulate by sampling particulate matter is described at t
wo different locations in La Coruna (NW Spain), using high volume samp
lers equipped with glass microfiber filters. Filters were subjected to
an acidic extraction. Heavy metal determination was performed by mean
s of atomic absorption spectroscopy with electrothermal atomization fo
r Pb, Mn, Cd and V, with an air-acetylene flame for Fe, Zn and Cu. Pri
ncipal components analysis suggest two main sources of elements: anthr
opogenic and soil erosion patterns. Results showed that the particulat
e matter concentration depends on atmospheric conditions. (C) 1997 Els
