Abstract
Controlling for precollege aptitude and other influences, male intercollegi ate football and basketball players tended to have significantly lower leve ls of second-year writing skills and of third-year critical thinking and re ading comprehension than did nonathletes or athletes in other sports. There was little evidence to suggest broad-based negative cognitive impacts for women athletes during the second or third years of college.
