Abstract
The importance of understanding Quaternary glaciation in the Himalaya and t he problems associated with reconstructing former extents of glaciation and correlation are discussed. A comprehensive review of the current knowledge of glaciation and glacial chronologies for the Himalaya is presented. The areas include: Bhutan; Northern Himalaya-South Tibet Province (North Everes t-Xixabangma, Khumbu Himal, Langtang, Buri Gandaki valley, Marsyangdi valle y, Upper Kali Gandaki valley, Shiptong Pass, Shorung Himal, Annapurna-Dhaul agiri south, and isolated massifs); Garhwal; Lahul; Zanskar and Ladakh; Kas hmir; and Northern Pakistan (Swat, Nanga Parbat-Middle Indus, Baltistan, Gi lgit and the Hunza valley). Means of improving knowledge and understanding of the glacial history of the Himalaya are proposed.
