With the trend in industry to a smaller, more broadly skilled workforce, mu
ch of the work previously carried out by employees of corporations is now p
erformed by contractors. This trend has led to innovative agreements and ar
rangements between contractors and corporations that range from partnership
s to traditional contracts. The success of these relationships depends on t
he philosophy and content of the agreements, the role management plays in e
stablishing them, and the ongoing stewardship involved. This article addres
