Dislocations substructure in beta silicon nitride have been studied by tran
smission electron microscopy in a sample deformed in compression at 850 deg
rees C under confining pressure. Both glide systems [0001]{1 (1) over bar 0
0} and [0001]{11 (2) over bar 0} have been demonstrated. The velocity of ed
ge dislocations has been found to be larger than that of screw dislocations
for these two types of glide system. Cross-slip events between these two g
lide systems, as well as a large Peierls stress along [0001], can be relate
d to a sessile core structure of the screw dislocations.
