We propose a class of forward-backward asymmetries with respect to the subp
rocess c.m. scattering angle in V + jet production at hadron colliders, wit
h V being any of (W, Z, gamma, H), which are directly proportional to the g
luon distribution g(x). The information that these asymmetries can provide
is complementary to that reachable from measurements of the transverse mome
ntum and/or the rapidity distributions of a V in kinematical regimes where
gluon scattering subprocesses dominate. The accuracy which can be reached i
n the W, Z and gamma cases, at the upgraded Fermilab Tevatron and at CERN L
HC, should allow a considerable improvement of our knowledge of the gluon d
istribution function, especially at large x. [S0556-2821(99)04801-8].
