G. Neyens et al., Magnetic moment of the 1(-) ground state in N-18 measured with a new beta level mixing nuclear magnetic resonance technique, PHYS REV L, 82(3), 1999, pp. 497-500
The N-18 ground state magnetic moment \mu\ = 0.135(15)mu(N) has been measur
ed using a modified beta nuclear magnetic resonance technique. The value is
compared to shell-model calculations. Spin-aligned N-18 projectile fragmen
ts were produced in the fragmentation of Ne-22 at 60.3 MeV/nucleon. Polariz
ation of the nuclear spins was resonantly induced by a combined magnetic di
pole, electric quadrupole, and radio frequency interaction. This is the fir
st application of a new method that allows production of polarized nuclei f
rom spin-aligned projectile fragments, allowing one to measure beta asymmet
ries. The method opens a new range of applications to study static dipole a
nd quadrupole moments of exotic nuclei near the drip lines. [S0031-9007(98)
