Castration in the dog is a widely practised operation, for which the effect
iveness of the technique does not need to be proved. The operation by endos
copy involves devascularization of the testicles. The originality of this m
ethod is that the post-operative period is less difficult foe the patient a
nd owner alike because it is no longer necessary for the dog to wear a devi
ce to stop it disturbing the site of incision. In addition, the presence of
fibrous testicles in the scrotal position avoids the impression of mutilat
ion often associated with castration. The present study showed that the ope
ration by endoscopy was totally effective and safe. The only factor which l
imits widespread use of this technique is the relatively high cost of the e
ndoscopy material necessary to perform the operation.
