The dependence of the amplitude, phase lag and shape of the response of a n
ovel piezo-optical monitoring system on the thickness and the geometry of c
olour development in the reagent layer have been studied using model system
s, and compared with the response of a typical real reagent system. The pri
nciples for optimisation of phase-locking and illumination frequency are il
lustrated, and the use of the system to study the diffusion and reaction ki
netics for reactions of analytes in solid reagent matrices is discussed. (C
