A simple scheme for calculating the quantum confinement effects in low dime
nsional systems is developed and an exactly solvable problem is used to ind
icate the general approach and to verify the general accuracy attained by t
he scheme. The size dependence of T-1,T-c and X-1,X-c states in GaAs cubic
quantum dots with edge length up to 700 Angstrom is investigated, as an exa
mple of more practical applications. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science
