Remifentanil, the latest development among the fentanyl congeners, offers a
dvantages for modern anaesthetic practice. Its application by manual infusi
on, however, is characterised by some disadvantages. A target-controlled in
fusion of remifentanil that is based on population pharmacokinetics is intr
oduced and discussed as being superior to manual application in terms of ac
curacy, individual adaption and safety both during anaesthesia and the tran
sition to the early postoperative period.
