Abstract
The vibration and critical speed of thin, isotropic cylindrical shells unde r constant axial loads is studied. In the present analysis, Donnell's theor y for a thin-walled cylindrical shell is used. The effects of initial hoop tension and the centrifugal and Coriolis forces are taken into account. Of special interest in this study are the effects of loads on the critical spe eds of the rotating shell. To validate the present analysis, comparisons ar e made with existing results for a rotating shell with no external loading and good agreement is obtained. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
