The problem of studying the interaction between electromagnetic fields and
biological systems can be approached from both theoretical and experimental
points of view. In this work, a theoretical model based on experimental re
sults has been introduced in order to study the exposure of neuronal cells
to radio frequency (RF) fields. The model proposed is based on linking toge
ther two different levels of the biological scale, the level of the single
ionic channel of the membrane and the level of the whole cellular membrane.
Specific electromagnetic signals have been considered: in particular pulse
d signals and continuous wave signals. Results have shown that the effect o
f the electromagnetic exposure can be regarded as a variation from the phys
iological situation of less than 6%. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rig
