Abstract
A simple and efficient method was developed for the preparation of opticall y active 1-hydroxyalkylphosphonates. Diethyl 1-butyryloxyalkylphosphonates were hydrolysed by whole cell cultures of Pseudomonas fluorescens or Penici llium citrinum to the afford corresponding hydroxyphosphonates with moderat e to good yields and satisfactory optical purity. The substrate specificity of these two microorganisms is discussed in detail. (C) 1999 Wiley-Liss, I nc.
