Abstract
This review provides criteria for defining premature ejaculation (PE) and i dentifying men with this dysfunction. Included are discussions of possible PE subtypes and causes of PE. Furthermore, two empirically supported cognit ive-behavioral approaches for treating PE are described and salient issues surrounding these types of treatment are considered. Biologically based tre atments available to PE men are presented, with attention to the relative e ffectiveness and limitations of the various alternatives. Finally, a model illustrating factors relevant to determining the best therapeutic strategy is described, concluding with a brief discussion of the value of combining biological and psychological modes of treatment.
