Abstract
The Atlas Computer Laboratory was, and in many ways still is, one of the ma
jor computer laboratories in the world. It was established to provide a ser
vice to British scientists at a time when powerful computers were not usual
ly available. II provided both a service and a training ground for many of
today's leaders in the computer field.
