The recombinant asparginyl-tRNA synthetase from the thermophilic bacte
rium Thermus thermophilus expressed in Escherichia coli has been cryst
allized from PEG 6000 solutions. Depending on the PEG concentrations t
he crystals were in either tetragonal or hexagonal space groups. Altho
ugh generally smaller, the latter (space group P6(4)22) diffracted bet
ter, to a resolution of 2.8 Angstrom. Using the coordinates of the yea
st aspartyl-tRNA synthetase structure molecular replacement methods we
re applied to both tetragonal and hexagonal crystals; a solution was f
ound which gave excellent crystal packing in both space groups.
