Traditional image processing teaching has used materials where the theory a
nd drill are separated into textbooks and image processing packages. HTML a
nd JAVA might allow easier construction of an integrated teaching resource.
Such a resource would have widespread, platform-independent accessibility.
This paper reports our assessment of this potential, which is explored thr
ough extensions of the HIPR teaching materials. Our conclusions are that th
e approach is feasible and attractive to students, that a few standard prog
ramming protocols reduce development time, and that use of compiled JAVA is
essential.
