A method for acquiring range data based on time-correlated single-phot
on counting is described. This method uses a short-pulse (approximate
to 10-ps) laser diode, a detector based on a silicon single-photon ava
lanche diode, and standard photon-counting timing electronics. The acc
uracy of the technique has been measured as approximate to +/- 30 mu m
in a laboratory experiment and corresponds closely to the results of
a theoretical simulation. (C) 1997 Optical Society of America.
