Abstract
Electron-stimulated disruption of the c(2 x 2) CO adlayer on a Pt(001) surface was studied by analysis of the LEED I/V characteristics in th e average t-matrix approximation(ATA). Both disordered CO adlayers and carbon adlayers on three high symmetry bonding sites, on-top, bridge, and fourfold hollow sites, were considered as possible remnant adlaye rs on the Pt(001) surface. Carbon was favored over carbon monoxideas t he remnant species and the respective optimum parameters for the bondi ng sites considered had unexpectedly similar, good R factors. The impl ication of this inconclusive result for the possible remnant adlayer a nd the applicability of ATA to a disordered adlayer system is discusse d.
