Abstract
The Al-27 triple-quantum MAS spectrum of an amorphous sol-gel precursor of 2:1 type mullite has been compared to those of crystalline 2:1 type mullite and andalusite. For the 2:1 type mullite and its precursor three peaks wer e observed. The true isotropic chemical shifts and the composite quadrupola r parameters were determined. The structural significance of the central pe ak in the spectrum of the precursor material is discussed in the context of the well-known structures of the two other crystalline phases.
