A capsular polysaccharide was obtained from Alteromonas nigrifaciens I
AM 13010T by saline extraction. On the basis of H-1 and C-13 NMR spect
roscopy, including one-dimensional (1D) NOE spectroscopy, 2D rotating-
frame NOE spectroscopy (ROESY), and H-1-detected heteronuclear H-1, C-
13 multiple-quantum coherence (HMQC), it was concluded that the polysa
ccharide contained inter alia an acidic sugar, 3-deoxy-D-manno-octulos
onic acid (Kdo), and a rare amino sugar, 2-acetamido-2,6-dideoxy-L-tal
ose (L-6dTalNAc, N-acetylpneumosamine), and has a pentasaccharide repe
