In this letter, the electromagnetic field distribution and the bistatic sca
ttering width are computed in the case of scattering by nonlinear dielectri
c cylinders, whose nonlinearities are characterized by an amplitude depende
nce of the phase velocity. The nonlinearity is assumed to be weak, and the
field computation is performed by an iterative approach based on the distor
ted-wave Born approximation. Several numerical simulations are reported, co
ncerning the computation of the internal and external field distribution, t
he bistatic scattering width, and the effective phase velocity of circular
cylinders with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. (C) 1999 John Wiley & So
