To achieve a better insight into photoluminescence phenomena of nanocrystal
line silicon, silsesquioxanes (R-n(SiO1.5)(n), n = 6, 8, 10, 12) with vario
us Ligands R have been investigated. All silsesquioxanes show photoluminesc
ence in the blue spectral region; its intensity depends on the cage size n
and on size and electronegativity of the ligands. A charge transfer process
between cage and ligands is proposed as the mechanism responsible for phot
oluminescence.
