The optical properties of AlGaAs/GaAs (311)A and (100) oriented quantum wel
ls are investigated by photoluminescence under high hydrostatic pressure at
room temperature. Based on the hydro static character of our experiment an
d making use of the fact that the energy shift per unit pressure can be con
verted as the energy shift per fractional volume change we correlate the ex
perimental blue shift energy of both (311)A and (100) structures with a vol
umetric strain induced by pressure. The gradual enhancement of luminescence
intensity with pressure, observed only for a (311)A oriented quantum well,
is correlated to an enhancement in the 1D character of the channels in thi
s structure, which are characterized by a periodic corrugation pattern alon
g [-2,3,3] on that surface.
