We have measured the de Stark shift of the 6S-->17S transition in atomic ce
sium using laser spectroscopy. The result of our experiment is 0.7262(8) Hz
(V/cm)(-2). This value disagrees with a previous experiment but is within 0
.3% of the value predicted by ab initio calculations. This measurement remo
ves the largest outstanding disagreement between experiment and ab initio t
heory of low-lying states in atomic cesium. [S1050-2947(99)51101-3].
