M. Mochena et al., Theoretical suggestion for experimental detection of magnetism in atomic clusters by photon scattering, PHYS REV B, 59(2), 1999, pp. R689-R692
We suggest that the large magnetic moments carried by atomic clusters of ma
nganese (for example, 25 bohr magnetons for Mn-5 cluster) may be detected b
y means of polarized optical spectroscopic methods even on a semiconducting
substrate. Our estimate for the magnetic part of the cross section for Mn-
5 cluster is of the order of 10(-6), including possible resonance contribut
ion from states near the highest occupied molecular orbital state of the cl
uster. This appears to be well within the accuracy of current spectroscopic
techniques. [S0163-1829(99)50402-5].
