Access to the port of Antwerp in Belgium is provided through locks connecti
ng the river with docks. The decision to build a container quay on the rive
r, outside the port, will hinder through traffic. A simulation model is bui
lt to investigate the hindrance of the river quay. Detailed modelling of ma
ritime traffic on the river, including navigation logic, tides and lock pla
nning, are included. Simulation experiments are run based both on current r
eal-life measurements and on traffic forecasts. The model is built and impl
emented in such a way that it is reusable and extendible for future decisio
ns on infrastructure improvements or maintenance projects.
