Growth and surrounding environment of Upper Jurassic stromatolites fro
m North Germany ave been reconstructed by isotope and palynological da
ta. The stromatolites are embedded in thick marls. This circumstance l
ead to the continuation of anoxic conditions in the sediment throughou
t diagenesis. Trapped palynomorphs and plant detritus show an exceptio
nally good preservation. The documented plant communities allow a reco
nstruction of the surrounding environment. The stromatolites seem to h
ave grown in a restricted, marginal marine environment, probably in th
e intertidal or shallow subtidal zone. Light delta(13)C-values support
the interpretation of growth within a restricted lagoon.
