Combined in situ structural and ex situ magnetic studies of the Co/NiO(111)
interface are presented. The Co films were grown on NiO(111) single crysta
ls. Structural studies were performed by grazing incidence X-ray diffractio
n dming growth. The effect of the temperature of the substrate during depos
ition was investigated. Under specific growth conditions, an almost pure FC
C Co film can be obtained. Magnetic measurements were performed ex situ by
magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). A strong correlation between the magnet
ic properties and the crystallographic structure of the Co him is evidenced
. High coercive fields are measured for all samples. (C) 1998 Elsevier Scie
