A novel imaging low-energy x-ray fluorescence spectrometer with no moving p
arts, based on a microchannel plate relay optic and an open electrode charg
e-coupled device with good sub-keV quantum efficiency, is described. Result
s from a proof of principle experiment using the Rutherford Appleton Labora
tory picosecond pulsed laser plasma x-ray source are described and the perf
ormance limits of the spectrometer explored. Copyright (C) 1999 John Wiley
