We investigate gaugino condensation in the framework of the strongly couple
d heterotic E-8 X E-8 string (M-theory). Supersymmetry is broken in a hidde
n sector and gravitational interactions induce soft breaking parameters in
the observable sector. An important difference to the situation in the weak
ly coupled case is the fact that observable sector gaugino masses are compa
rable in size to the soft scalar masses. They are all of order of the gravi
tino mass and lead to satisfactory phenomenological and cosmological conseq
uences.
