Abstract
Recently, Steigmann and Ogden developed a non-linear theory of elastic boun dary coatings for elastic bodies which are subject to plane strain deformat ions, In this paper, we seek to study the behaviour of a suitably coated is otropic, hyperelastic layer which has been subjected to a homogeneous, bi-a xial, plane strain deformation, The stability of the layer is investigated by studying incremental deformations about this finitely deformed state. Fo r the case of symmetrically coated layers, explicit bifurcation conditions are obtained and stability inequalities are derived. Particular strain-ener gy functions are then chosen and the bifurcation conditions are investigate d numerically, A numerical study of asymmetrically coated layers is also ca rried out.
