The magnetic properties of zinc-blende Hg1-xMnxSx where x = 0.024 and 0.066
were presented. The measurements were done by the SQUID technique. The mag
netic susceptibility was measured in the temperature range from 1.8 to 180
K. The magnetisation was recorded in magnetic fields up to 50 kOe at liquid
helium temperatures. The experimental data were analyzed simultaneously in
extended nearest neighbour par approximation leading to the Mn-Mn nearest-
neighbour exchange constant J(NN) = -7.7 +/- 1.1 K and its radial decay for
further neighbours proportional to: proportional to R-5. The standard anal
ysis of high-temperature susceptibility gave the value of effective exchang
e constant J(eff) = -11.8 +/- 1.2 K. The obtained data were compared with t
hose published earlier for Hg1-xMnxS. Our data confirmed the chemical trend
expected within the whole family of mercury chalcogenides. (C) 1999 Elsevi
