Different materials were implanted in muscles of dogs to study the osteoind
uction of calcium phosphate biomaterials. Bone formation was only seen in c
alcium phosphate biomaterials with micropores, and could be found in hydrox
yapatite (HA) ceramic, tricalcium phosphate/hydroxyapatite ceramic (BCP), b
eta-TCP ceramic and calcium phosphate cement. The osteoinductive potential
was different in different materials. The results indicate that osteoinduct
ion can be a property of calcium phosphate biomaterials when they exhibit s
pecific chemical and structural characteristics. (C) 1998 Kluwer Academic P
