The introduction of abalone in Chile: Ten years later

A general description of the introduction of red abalone, Haliotis rufescen s (Swainson, 1822) into Chile, was presented in 1989 at the First Abalone S ymposium. Economic, social, and environmental factors have stimulated the d evelopment of the culture of species with a high commercial value, like the red abalone. In this article, we analyze its present situation and discuss future perspectives of the development of its culture.
