We consider an artificial reaction system whose components are binary strin
gs. Upon encounter, two binary strings produce a third string which compete
s for storage space with the originators. String types or species can only
survive when produced in sufficient numbers. Spatial interactions through i
ntroduction of a topology and rules for distance-dependent reactions are di
scussed. We observe various kinds of survival strategies of binary strings.
