Abstract
Three short-period coherent face-centered Fe/Cu multilayers are characteriz ed using transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Both the t etragonal distortion of the Fe and its electron structure are shown to depe nd on Fe-layer thickness, with the Fe expanded by up to 7% over its cubic l attice parameter. The effect of changes in electron structure on "strain" i n short-period coherent multilayers is discussed. [S0163-1829(99)05903-2].
