Depression is a frequent problem In women who are candidates for receiving
estrogen replacement therapy during perimenopause and menopause. However, t
here are no guidelines on how to optimize antidepressant administration wit
h estrogen, especially in women insufficiently responsive to antidepressant
s. Neurobiological actions of estrogen as well as clinical observations of
estrogen effects on mood suggest that more research is needed to help guide
the use of estrogen concomitantly with antidepressants.
