Abstract
This review underlines the importance of different enzymes (beta-glucocereb rosidase, phospholipase A(2), proteases and cholesterol sulfatase) in the f ormation and maintenance of the epidermal barrier function. Certain disease s may be characterized by the lack or excess of one or more of these differ ent enzyme activities, altering the homeostatic equilibrium of the epidermi s. In addition to this, particular enzymes may show potential in the develo pment of novel dermocosmetic strategies.
