Abstract
The cis-2,6-disubstituted tetrahydropyran 3 and trans-2,5-disubstituted tet rahydrofuran 4 required for the total synthesis of the potent antitumor age nt mucocin 1 were prepared from the alpha,beta-unsaturated ester 2 using a complementary Sharpless asymmetric epoxidation/cyclization protocol.
